Qualcomm Technologies have announced its Quick Charge 5, its commercial fast charging solution. It is promising to charge the phone from 0 to 50% in just 5 minutes. A huge jump from its existing Quick Charge 4 technology.

Quick Charge 5 offers 10% more cooler battery and 70% more power efficiency

Qualcomm Says it’s Quick Charge 5 is world’s first “commercial charging solution” which supports more than 100W charging power. QC5 technology will keep the battery 10% cooler and 70% more efficient or 4 times faster compared to its Quick Charge 4.

Qualcomm first announced its fast charging technology “Quick Charge” in 2013. Delivering the power delivery going beyond the traditional 5W. Since last 7 years the charging speeds increased from 10W in QC 1 to 18W in QC 3 in 2016 and in 2017, Qualcomm increased to 27W in Quick Charge 4.

The charging test results were performed on a 4500mAh battery that charged 0-50% in 5 minutes and it completed the 100% in just 15 minutes. Qualcomm claims that the QC5 is fast as well as kept exteme safety measures. It incorporates 12 separate voltage, current and temperature protections, including USB-input overvoltage protection at 25V and external power controls beyond 30V.

With Quick Charge 5, Qualcomm have integrated 2 new Power Manafement IC’s (PMIC) SMB1396 and SMB1398 which supports both wired and wireless input and it can be used in 1 cell and 2 cell batteries. It also has backwards compatability with the version 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 4+. Its USB-PD support, QC5 will be able to charge larger devices at full speed.

Currently Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, 865+ chipsets and the future premium and high end snapdragon chipsets will be supported by Quick Charge 5. However it is unknown that the current devices with these chipset will support the QC5, as the chipsets are required to pair with the new SMB’s announced.

Quick Charge 5 supported devices are expected to be available on commercial devices in Q3, 2020.
