AMD has revealed its much waited next generation desktop processors at an event on October 8 2020. The company CEO Lisa Su has announced the Ryzen 5000 series of CPU based on its Zen 3 architecture in an online event.
The Ryzen 5000 series desktop processors consists of 4 models priced from $299 to the top of the line at $799.
The Zen 3 architecture is a completely new architecture compared to its last two generation CPU’s. The Ryzen 5000 series desktop processors have a 19% IPC compared to the previous generation. They have also managed to increase the performance without bumping up the power consumption.

The top end processor Ryzen 9 5950X which has 16 cores and 32 threads with a base clock speed of 3.4GHz which can be boosted up to 4.9GHz. As per AMD, this is the highest single-thread performance of any desktop processor and most multi-core performance of any desktop gaming processor and any desktop processor in a mainstream CPU socket. It is also having a cache size of 72MB and Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 105W.
The 5900X CPU has a base clock speed of 3.7GHz and a boost clock speed is up to 4.8GHz with its 12 cores and 24 threads. It has a total cache of 70MB and a TDP of 105W which is priced at $549.
The third CPU Ryzen 7 5800X features 8 cores and 16 threads and has a base clock speed of 3.8GHz with a boost clock speed up to 4.7GHz. The 5800X has a 36MB Cache with 105W of TDP. This Zen 3 architecture based CPU is expected to go on sale at $449.
Finally the Ryzen 5 5600X has 6 cores and 12 threads with base clock speed of 3.7GHz and boost clock up to 4.6GHz. The 5600X has a lower TDP of 65W compared to the other 3 CPU announced. The CPU will come with Wraith Stealth cooler in the box. AMD has priced this CPU at $299.
AMD has also given a sneak peak of its upcoming Radeon RX 6000 series graphics card during the launch event and it is expected launch later this month. AMD has also announced that anyone who buys a Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9 model from either the new Ryzen 5000 series or the previous-gen Ryzen 9 3950X, Ryzen 9 3900XT or Ryzen 7 3800XT between October 20 and December 31, 2020, will be eligible to receive a free digital copy of Far Cry 6 – Standard Edition.
The new Zen 3 based Ryzen 5000 series desktop processors are expected to available for purchase from 5th November 2020. The new 5000 series CPU’s will be compatible with AMD 500 series motherboards with a BIOS update.
